No matter if youâre in the hospital for surgery or visiting your primary care physician in the clinic, nurses provide more than care when we are ill â they provide comfort and compassion. In recognition of the incredible service nurses provide to our community, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is joining the American Nursing Association in commemorating National Nurses Week. âNurses work each day providing exceptional care to patients,â explained Donna Boatright, administrator of RPMH. âThey have the most interaction with the patients at our all of our departments and serve as ambassadors for our organization. They are among our most essential assets.â
National Nurses Week is celebrated at the same time each year. The event is rooted from the work of the professionâs most notable icon, Florence Nightingale.
Often referred to as the âlady with the lamp,â Nightingale received her reputation during the Crimean War when she led a group of 38 nurses through the battleground. Throughout her journey, Nightingale provided much needed services to the badly wounded British troops of the war. As night fell, she continued her mission lighting the way with her famous lamp.
National Nurses Week begins on May 6 of each year, the anniversary of Nightingaleâs arrival in Crimea and ends on her birthday, May 12. In 1974, President Nixon declared May 6 through May 12 National Nurses Week.
âOur nursing staff not only contributes to our excellent patient satisfaction they promote nursing through their generous scholarship awarded area high school seniors interested in pursuing a career in nursingâ added Boatright. âTheir commitment to our community rivals that of larger community hospitals, and thatâs why RPMH is able to provide specialized care with local compassion.â
