RPMH offers free cholesterol screening
September is National Cholesterol Education Month and to acknowledge this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Lab will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening.Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body. Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly. But if you have too much in your blood, it can stick to the walls of your arteries. This is called plaque. Plaque can narrow your arteries or even block them. High levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of heart disease. Your cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older. There are usually no signs or symptoms that you have high blood cholesterol, but it can be detected with a blood test. You are likely to have high cholesterol if members of your family have it, if you are overweight or if you eat a lot of fatty foods. You can lower your cholesterol by exercising more and eating more fruits and vegetables. You also may need to take medicine to lower your cholesterol.Immunization clinic is held every Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. and the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m.; The health department will be administering flu vaccines on these dates at the health department: Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 16, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. only; Monday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during lunch; and Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. only. The health department will also be at Blackwell school from 9-11 a.m. and the Roscoe Community Center from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22.Family Planning services are available through several funding sources. Services include pap smears, breast exams, pregnancy testing, methods of birth control, and screening and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
