Run for the WASP this Saturday

November 7, 2013

The Fourth Annual 5K Run for the WASP will take place this Saturday at the National WASP WWII Museum, located at 210 Avenger Field Road in Sweetwater.
The event will include a 5K Run for the WASP, 1.3 mile Fun Walk, and a 1 mile Kids Race, as part of the Veterans Day Celebration honoring the WWII Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) and all veterans. The race starts at 1 p.m. and the kids run is at 12:40 p.m. with a WWII aircraft fly-over.
Race directors Marvin Keenan and Jeannette Bryant say that the race began four year ago and they have seen a steady increase in people participating each year. Last year the race had 75 participants. Some past runners have included Boston Marathon runners and elite ultrarunners, as well as local runners. "The event is very well attended by members of the community as well as by people as far away as Dallas and Carrollton and also people in the area such as Snyder and Big Spring. The Abilene Running Club is also showing an interest in the race," said Keenan. "What makes the race different is that it is a big race in a small town. Our goal is to put on a first class race that Sweetwater can be proud of," added Keenan.
Also before the race, there will be a WWII airplane flyover. "The purpose of the race is to honor the WASP and all Veterans who have served in the past and who are currently serving, especially the women Veterans who are carrying on the tradition of the WASP," said Keenan.
There will also be a Zumba class before the race for those who would like to warm up with a work out. Ladies from Dyess Air Force Base will also attend the event, according to Keenan.
The cost for the race is $25 for adult runners or walkers, $20 for pre-registered students and military and $10 for kids 12 and under. Awards will be given by age groups that will include 0-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-99. Registration will begin at noon in the WASP Museum parking lot. Everyone participating will receive a ribbon and a race bib.
The WASP Museum will be open during the event and all proceeds from the event will benefit the WASP Museum.
Local sponsors for the event include Zollie Steakley Law Firm, Judge David Hall, The Hall Law Firm, Nolan County Bar Association, Texas Sport and Spine – Abilene, Texas State Technical College, Bahlman Cleaners and Texas National Bank.
To register, or for more information, call the WASP Museum at 325-235-0099 or register by noon on race day. Registration forms can be downloaded from the website (waspmuseum.org) or can be picked up at Morgan Real estate, located at 217 Oak Street.
