Local sports fans will be treated to a double dose of Sweetwater vs. Big Spring today.
The schools’ volleyball teams will meet in a Dis-trict 5-3A matchup that tips off at 5 p.m. at Mustang Gym, and the football game — also a District 5-3A contest — kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Mustang Bowl.
Both Sweetwater teams need victories to keep realistic playoff hopes alive. The Sweetwater volleyball team brings a 1-3 district record into the match with four games remaining, while the football team is 0-1 in district and has three games left to play.
This will be the only local “doubleheader” played this year.
The freshman volleyball team also hosts Big Spring at 5 p.m. today, while the JV match is scheduled to begin at 6:30. Sweetwater’s varsity can pull into a tie for third place by beating Big Spring (2-2) today.
In football, Sweetwater currently trails Brownwoood (1-0), Wylie (1-0) and Snyder (0-0) in the standings, while Big Spring has yet to win a game this year and is 0-1 in district.
Roscoe (0-6, 0-1) is at Roby (1-5, 0-1) for a District 7-1A, Division II game today and Blackwell (0-6) plays Hermleigh (4-2) in non-district, while Highland (2-5) will get the week off before it entertains Ira next week to start district.
Blackwell will also start its district season next week when it entertains Novice.
For Sweetwater, today’s game against Big Spring is almost a must-win. It still must face Snyder and Brownwood, which beat Big Spring 38-7 last week.
Today’s other district game will be in Brownwood, where the Lions are hosting Snyder. Wylie is idle after beating Sweetwater 20-15 this past week in both teams’ District 5-3A opener.
