Tonight’s games against Wylie mark the final time Sweetwater’s basketball teams host a doubleheader at Mustang Gym, and it will also be the girls team’s last regular-season game.
While both teams will be facing long odds of beating Wylie — whose teams are a combined 16-0 in district play — each has shown im-provement over last season and the girls still have a shot at making the playoffs.
Sweetwater and Big Spring are 5-4 this season in District 4-3A and are locked in a third-place tie, and each has won against the other in district play.
The most likely scenario is that Sweetwater and Big Spring — which plays its finale at 7-2 Midland Green-wood — will both lose ton-ight, forcing a “play-in” game between the Lady Mustangs and Lady Steers later this week to decide the district’s No. 3 berth. Of course, the same thing will happen in the unlikely event that both win today. Wylie and Greenwood have secured the top two playoff spots in 4-3A.
Details of a Sweetwater-Big Spring play-in game, if it happens, are currently in the works and will be announced after tonight’s games are played.
The Lady Mustangs (19-13 overall) are coming off a 48-39 win over Snyder in which Elise Lawrence had 15 points, and are trying to hit the 20-win plateau for the first time in several years. More importantly, Sweetwater is trying to ad-vance to the playoffs for the first time since 2005.
Sweetwater’s boys (2-5) have three district games left and are tied for fourth place after beating Snyder 46-44 Tuesday.
To make the playoffs, the Mustangs would have to win their last three games and hope that either Green-wood or Monahans — both tied for second place at 5-2 — lose their last three in order for Sweetwater to pull into a tie with one of them for third place. After today, Sweetwater travels to Big Spring on Friday and ends its season by hosting Green-wood next Tuesday.
