Phone scams continue in Sweetwater area

Another phone scam has hit the Sweetwater area.
Hubery O'Pry shared that he recently received a phone call that showed up on his Caller ID as a private caller. He was informed that he was eligible to apply for a card to help with his medical expenses from the Medical Services Group, based in Atlanta, Georgia.
The caller told O'Pry that in order to obtain the card, he would need to share his information over the phone. O'Pry, however, said that he already has a card that assisted with his expenses through Medicare and Medicaid.
But when the caller insisted on offering him the assistance card, O'Pry — in an effort to determine the validity of the caller — said that he would give his information only if he was given more information about the Atlanta-based company. The caller, he said, immediately hung up the phone.
And not only has he been targeted, but he noted that a friend of his also received a similar call. O'Pry said that both callers seemed to have an Asian accent.
He said he shared the attempted phone scam to the Nolan County Prescription Program and hoped to publicize the incident in an effort to prevent others from falling victim to the scheme.
