Several athletes from SW advance to area meet

Several of Sweetwater’s track athletes assured them-selves of advancing to next week’s area meet with top-four finishes at the District 4-3A track meet in Snyder that ended Thursday.
For the Sweetwater girls, Kayla Chowning was fourth in the high jump (4-8); Kel-si Crosson was second in the triple jump (33-6 1/2); Zanesha Collins was fourth in the discus (97-9); Cierra Knox was fourth in the shot put (32-5 1/2); and Suede Shirley was third in the 200 dash (26.86). Also qualify-ing for Sweetwater’s girls were the third-place 800 relay (1:47.11) and the mile relay, which also was third with a time of 4:20.35.
The girls who placed in an event but failed to advance were Knox, who was fifth in the discus (97-6); Marissa Sanchez, who was fifth in the 300 hurdles (50.68); Kelsi Crosson, who was fifth in the 200 dash (27.71); and Sweetwater’s fifth-place 400 relay (53.036.
As a team, Sweetwater had 60 points to place fifth.
For the Sweetwater boys, Deandre Gatson was second in the triple jump (43-0 3/4); Nick Nemir was third in the 110 hurdles (15.63) and the 300 hurdles (39.93); Kaleb Hoover was third in the 400 dash (51.28); and Isaiah McGee was fourth in the 200 dash (23.39). Also qualifying was the 400 relay, which was fourth with a time of 44.343.
Boys who placed in an event but failed to advance were Nemir, who was fifth in the long jump (19-5 1/2); McGee, who was sixth in the long jump (19-5 1/2); and Gatson, who was sixth in the 100 dash (11.74).
As a team, Sweetwater had 46 points to tie for fifth place with Snyder.
The area meet will be on April 19 in Pecos. The top four finishers in each event at the area meet qualify for the regional meet on April 26-27 in Lubbock.
