LUBBOCK — After making her first trip to state as a junior, Jayci Shelton is going back — this time in both hurdles — to Austin her senior year after a clean sweep at regionals on Tuesday.
The state meet, scheduled for May 13-14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus, gives Shelton another shot at matching her older sister Morgan’s 2009 accomplishment of winning a first-place gold medal in the hurdles. Jayci was fifth at state last year in the 300 hurdles, and gets to compete not only in that event again later this month but in the 100 hurdles as well.
On Tuesday, she won the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.17 — .38 seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer — and the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.90. Shelton will be one of just three Nolan County athletes at state this year, and the only one to qualify from the 3A classi-fication.
Also going to state are Roscoe’s Caden Smith, who on Monday won the 1A boys discus with a throw of 169 feet, 7 inches, his second-best effort of the year, and the boys shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 2 inches; and Highland’s Callie Sandus-ky, making her first trip to state after a second-place finish in the 1A girls high jump (5-4). Sandusky, like Shelton and Smith, is a senior. But Roscoe’s Jacin-da Morales will have to wait another year to go back to Austin. Morales, who as a sophomore went to state in the 1A girls 800 run and had a fifth-place finish, failed to qualify in the 800 this time at her regional meet in Abilene after a sixth-place finish Tuesday with a time of 2:29.42. Morales wasn’t the only one disappointed, though, as Smith failed to qualify in a third event, the 110 hurdles, where his time of 16.14 seconds was sixth.
Shelton also competed in the 3A girls 1600 relay that was ninth on Monday and failed to qualify for Tuesday’s finals, where only the top eight relays compete, after running the prelim in 4:11.55. Roscoe’s Juan Solis was ninth in the 1A boys shot put (41-10 1/2) and Alicia Finn of Sweetwater was ninth in the 3A girls discus (105-4).
