Mustang athletics sports briefs

Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team suffered a blow to its District 4-3A playoff hopes Tuesday with a 3-0 defeat at Monahans.
The Lady Mustangs were defeated by scores of 17-25, 20-25, 20-25. Monahans improved to 4-2 in district, while Sweetwater fell to 2-4. The Lady Mustangs trail Monahans by two games in the race for the No. 3 playoff spot with just four matches left. Monahans is now 20-16 overall. Sweetwater, which will host last-place Snyder this Friday, has a 22-14 season record.

Sweetwater High School’s tennis team hosts Snyder this Friday at 3 p.m. in the first of three consecutive matches at home after play-ing at Andrews’ two-day tournament that was held this past weekend.
Sweetwater placed fifth overall at Andrews and had one individual as well as three teams win consolation, plus a third-place team finish. Teams winning consolation were Stephen Shipp and Isaiah Hernandez in No. 1 boys doubles, Billy Reeves and Zach Bax in No. 2 boys doubles and Keygan Valdez and Bryan Vause in No. 3 boys doubles, while the No. 3 girls doubles team of Vida Gamez and Teresa Perez-Poe placed third and Jenny Medellen won conso-lation in No. 1 girls singles.
