Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s girls and boys golf teams played in season-opening tournaments this past week-end at San Angelo and Sny-der, respectively.
The girls shot a two-day score of 845 for a sixth-place finish in San Angelo, while the boys placed fifth in Snyder after a two-day total of 690.
For the boys, Ryan Mercer shot 77-79-156 to finish in a tie for third place among medalists. Meanwhile, the team rebounded from an opening 370 on Friday to shoot 320 â€” the best one-day score of any team in the tournament â€” on Saturday.
Also among the top 10 medalists for Sweetwater was Mason Andrews, who was ninth (87-80-167).
The other two-day individual scores on Sweetwaterâ€™s No. 1 team came from Guy Bond (106-80-186) and Michael Hazard (100-113-213). Alex Castillo played for the No. 1 team Saturday and shot an 81.
Sweetwaterâ€™s other two-day scores came from Blake Cumbie, who shot 103-112-215; Kevin Ludlum (114-109-223); and Colin Dunn (128-122-250). Snyder shot 663 to win the team title.
The Sweetwater girls also improved on the second day at their event in San Angelo by firing a 407 after shooting a 438 in Fridayâ€™s open-ing round.
Individually, Alex Gomez shot 110-93-203; Haylee Stewart shot 109-103-212; Rachel Hunt shot 106-109-215; Amy Witt shot 115-102-217; and Molly Fincher shot 113-109-222.
Andrews shot a two-day score of 658 to run away with the team title. Snyder (746) was a distant second.
Both Sweetwater teams will resume play Friday at Big Springâ€™s two-day event.
