A local resident is making waves and food, all at the same time.
Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SW) Bobby Atkins recently boarded the USS Carl Vinson to teach the young Vinson sailors how to make homemade pizza. His 17 years of Navy service has given him numerous opportunities to teach culinary arts to junior Sailors.
Mr. Atkins praised the "hardworking" sailor-cooks for their "youth and motivation...a multi-talented group that juggles many things at a time."
However, outside of his teaching, Mr. Atkins serves the 398 personnel aboard the USS Sterret and participates in Navy Iron Chef Competitions.
And not only did Mr. Atkins pass on his experiences for food, but advice on how to add personality and passion to the culinary experience. He strives to serve customers and make sailors happy through the art of making exceptional food.
During his time on the Vinson, Mr. Atkins stayed in the galley and interacted with the sailors while observing them. Seeing the different procedures and practices proved to be a learning experience not only for the sailors, but for Mr. Atkins himself.
Assistant Supply Officer Lt. Cmdr. of the USS Vinson Benjamin Sheinman applauded Mr. Atkins' teaching to the young sailors, stating, “With this chance meeting he brought a passion for cooking and a different perspective.”
During his military career, Mr. Atkins has served at sea on the USS Okinawa and USS Iwo Jima, as well as on shore with the Naval Mobile Command Battalion One and Naval Network Warfare command in Norfolk, Virginia.
Mr. Atkins is the son of the Rev. Robert and Linda Sweet of Sweetwater and the late Bobby Atkins, Sr. He is a 1985 graduate of Sweetwater High School who participated in football and other sports. After graduating, Mr. Atkins enlisted in the United States Navy.
