Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams will wel-come Brownwood to Mus-tang Gym today for the final varsity doubleheader of the 2011-12 season with little more than pride at stake.
Today’s game will also end the season for the SHS girls, who are 1-6 in district and 15-17 overall. The Lady Mustangs, who are sched-uled to tip off at 6 p.m., are facing a Brownwood team that has a 5-2 district mark and clinched the No. 2 play-off spot this past Friday by defeating Big Spring 40-26.
Sweetwater lost at first-place Wylie (8-0) 64-38 on Friday. Today’s game will be the final one for three senior starters — Alicia Finn, Candice Hernandez and Kinsey Browning. Finn had a team-high 12 points against Wylie and Hernan-dez 10, while Browning had two points.
Today’s game is also the last of the season for the JV and freshman girls, who will play at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
The JV girls, who lost to Wylie 48-37, are 17-6 overall and 5-2 in district. The freshman girls, who lost to Wylie 37-32, are 15-6 over-all and 2-5 in district play.
Today’s game will also be a tough one for the varsity boys, who are 1-5 in district and 10-19 overall after losing to Wylie 85-34 Friday. They tip off at at 7:30 p.m. against a Brownwood team that is 4-1 in district and can clinch the No. 2 playoff spot with a victory. The Lions lead Big Spring (3-3) by 1 1/2 games and trail only Wylie (6-0) in district play.
Today’s game will be the last at home for Sweetwater and six seniors — Taylor Jones, Gabe Medellin, Pat-trick Palacios, Tino Martin-ez, Dylon Adames and Ant-hony Palacios. The JV boys (15-10, 2-4) and freshman boys (12-6, 3-3) will also play today at home for the last time at 4:30 and 6 p.m., respectively. All three boys teams will be idle on Friday and end the season Tuesday at Snyder.
Four other Nolan County varsity teams will also see action today. In District 9-A, Division I, the Roscoe girls (4-5) and Roscoe boys (1-7) will go to Stamford and in District 12-A, Division II, Blackwell’s girls (3-10) and boys (0-11) are paying visits to Sterling City. The Roscoe girls can extend their season with a win plus a Haskell loss, forcing a playoff for the district’s No. 3 spot. The Highland girls and boys are idle; the girls (22-7 season, 10-2 district) are preparing for yet another playoff run, while the boys (6-19, 3-7) have two games remaining.
