Sweetwater varsity teams recap

After winning all three of their games on Thursday, Sweetwater High School’s varsity basketball teams were a collective 0-3 Friday at their respective three-day tournaments in Ballinger.
However, the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs were still highly competitive as two of the defeats were by a combined three points.
Sweetwater’s girls (6-4) began the day with a 47-33 loss to Merkel, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A, and then lost to Clyde 46-45 later on Thursday. But the loss to Merkel doesn’t tell the whole story as Sweetwater led by six points (12-6 and 19-13) at the end of the first two quarters and trailed by only five (34-29) entering the fourth period.
Kendra Crosson was the leading scorer for Sweetwa-ter in both games with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Sweetwater boys lost 50-48 to host team Ballinger in the semifinal of their tournament on Friday. Sweetwater (2-2) was led by Dylan Bennett’s 17 points while Rhett Torres had 13, Isaiah McGee 12, Michael Hunt five and Trey Taylor one. The game was tied 31-31 after three quarters.
Sweetwater’s girls also got 10 points from Janell Wal-ker, eight from Kathleen Campbell, seven from Shel-by Cason, four from Suede Shirley and two from Kelsi Crosson and Elise Lawrence against Clyde, and the Lady Mustangs almost overcame a six-point (38-32) deficit at the end of three periods. Merkel — which will host Sweetwater in a girls-boys doubleheader on Tuesday — outscored the Lady Mustangs 34-14 in the last two quarters to get the vic-tory. Suede Shirley added seven points for Sweetwater while Shelby Cason had five points, Kayla Chowning three and Kelsi Crosson and Campbell two. The girls played Llano and Ballinger to end their tournament on Saturday while the boys were to play Clyde in their tournament for third place.
