Sweetwater High School has recently been notified that it has become a certified AVID school after two years of implementation. To be a certified AVID school the school must meet criteria in 11 essential areas, such as tutoring, rigorous courses, site team participation and strategies in writing, reading, inquiry and collaboration. The Sweetwater High School program has grown from 30 students in the ninth and tenth grades to 65 students this year in grades 9-12.
AVID is a college readiness program for students who may be the first in their families to go to college or desire the additional support to prepare for college. The students take honors courses to prepare for the rigor of college, visit college campuses during the year and apply to four-year colleges their senior year.
The AVID site team meets regularly to assure that the program is on target for certification and supports the students through fund raisers for their field trips. Each AVID site team member attends AVID Summer Institute for intense training in AVID strategies to be used in the classroom that will elevate all students to a higher level of thinking. These 15 members at Sweetwater High School plan and conduct annual professional development for the whole campus to encourage the faculty to use AVID strategies schoolwide.
