SHS teams finish up homestands with crucial games against Wylie

April 8, 2011

Sweetwater sports wrapup

Today’s contests against Wylie will be the last of four straight home games for Sweetwater High School’s baseball and softball teams against district opponents. Furthermore, they will be the last home games of the 2011 season for both teams.
And for the two squads, a victory today is crucial to remain viable contenders in District 5-3A, though the 2-3 Lady Mustang softball team — which will host Wylie at 5 p.m. — has more wiggle room than the 1-3 baseball team, which entertains Wylie at 7 p.m.
However, Coach Roland Herrera’s Mustangs are the “hotter” team right now after beating Big Spring 3-2 here Tuesday for their first win in district play. The Lady Mustangs fell 5-1 to Big Spring on Tuesday. Today’s softball game will be both “Senior Night” and “Strike Out Cancer Awareness.”
Sweetwater’s JV baseball team (2-2 district) goes to Wylie at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Mustangs got off to an 0-2 start by losing to Wylie 22-11 in its district opener and then falling to Brownwood 8-7 in its next outing a week later. But since those defeats, Coach Chance Evans’ team has defeated Snyder 6-3 and routed Big Spring 12-3.
Tennis teams tune up for district
Sweetwater’s tennis teams played at Snyder last week to get ready for this week’s district tournaments.
The JV team’s individual winners were Bryan Vause-Michael Redondo, who won consolation in boys doubles, and Javier Solano, who was second in boys singles.
Vause and Redondo opened by losing to a Mid-land Lee pairing before winning their next three matches. Solano beat Nathan Haynes of Frenship, Logan Perry of Snyder and Casey Bass of Westbrook before losing his final. Varsity winners were Joe Lopez, boys singles consolation; Dugan Thompson, first in girls singles; Heidi Taylor, third in girls singles; and Chris Hernandez-Jenny Ordway, second in mixed doubles.
