Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s varsity basketball teams did well at their holiday tournaments that were held this past Wednesday through Friday, finishing with a 6-3 overall record.
Sweetwaterâ€™s girls (13-11) won three of five games and played for the championship at the Breckenridge Lions Club tournament. The Lady Mustangs beat Albany (43-41) and Breckenridge (50-41) on Wednesday, then came back from a 46-36 loss to Tolar on Thursday to defeat Breckenridge 48-28 in Fridayâ€™s semifinals before losing to Tolar 43-42 in the championship game that was played later that day. Three Lady Mustang players were named to the all-tournament team â€” Alicia Finn, Kendra Crosson and Candice Hernandez. Her-nandez scored 21 points in Fridayâ€™s championship contest against Tolar, and she was also the top scorer against Breckenridge in the semifinals with 17 points.
Sweetwaterâ€™s boys (8-12), meanwhile, compiled a 3-1 record at a three-day, round-robin holiday tournament held in Anson this past Wednesday through Friday. The Mustangs beat Anson 40-34 in their first game, and also defeated Roby (47-40) and Christoval (59-39) before losing to Childress 75-44 in their last game. Kaleb Hoover led the Mustangs in scoring in each game and reached double figures each time. He scored 12 vs. Anson and 16 against Roby on Wednesday, had 29 points against Christoval on Thursday and had 20 vs. Childress in the teamâ€™s final game Friday.
Both teams will return to action Tuesday here against Roby. The girls play their game at 5:15 p.m. in their final tuneup for the start of district play, with the boys game at 6:30 p.m. JV boys and girls games will be played at 4 p.m.
After Tuesdayâ€™s games, the Sweetwater girls will be idle this weekend while the boys host Ballinger Friday.
Also this past week, the Roscoe girls and boys played at Sterling Cityâ€™s tournament and Highlandâ€™s teams played at a tournament in Grady. The Roscoe girls (9-8) beat Forsan 43-39 in their first game before losing to Sterling City 56-35, while the boys (0-11) lost to Forsan 49-31 and TLC 65-40. Highlandâ€™s girls and boys both finished 1-2 at Grady. The girls (14-6) fell 58-37 to Plains and 22-16 to Wink before beating Ira 51-18, and the boys (3-13) lost 68-21 to Grady and 55-25 to Plains before beating McCamey 40-32 in their final game.
In area basketball action on Tuesday, the Roscoe boys and girls host Eula in what will be the Plowgirlsâ€™ final tuneup for the start of district play. Also, Highlandâ€™s teams host Loraine while Blackwellâ€™s teams entertain Paint Rock.
On Friday, Roscoeâ€™s girls host Munday while High-land is at Trent and Black-well goes to Garden City.
