A few times each year I get to watch Sweetwater’s high school baseball and softball teams play a common opponent on the same day. I’ve been doing it for over 15 years, in fact.
Rarely, however, in all that time have both of the SHS teams played more en-tertaining games the same day than they did at Wylie on Tuesday.
And the Lady Mustang softball team’s 7-6 victory was more than just entertaining. It was a benchmark win for Sweetwater, which held off a rally to beat Wylie for the first time in school history and also give second-year Lady Mustang coach Steve Roberts his first district win since coming here.
The win came less than 24 hours after Sweetwat-er had suf-fered an 11-9 loss at Big Spring in its district ope-ner. In that game, the Lady Mustangs rallied from a 6-o deficit to tie the game 7-7 until a late Big Spring rally. Against Wylie, it was just the oppo-site as Sweetwater was the one taking a 6-0 lead and surviving a late rally to go 1-1 in District 5-3A and pull into a three-way tie for second place.
“It was a great win,” Roberts admitted.
While the loss at Big Spring had to sting — the Lady Mustangs had the bases loaded and no outs in their final at bat Monday before a double play helped to end the threat — Sweet-water’s youthful squad was able to bounce back with the help of a couple of key defensive plays in the bottom of the seventh inning that kept Wylie from completing its comeback.
The Lady Mustangs may be ready for a playoff run. They host non-district Crane Friday, then play their next four district games at home starting with Brownwood on Tuesday.
The Sweetwater baseball team is coming off perhaps its toughest loss of the season, falling to Wylie 14-13 after the Mustangs had taken a 10-run lead (11-1) midway through the game. Sweetwater also had the tying run at third base with no outs in its final at bat and was on the verge of loading the bases with a walk, until three straight strikeouts by pitcher Cole Townsend al-lowed the Bulldogs to finish off their amazing rally.
Don’t count the Mustangs out, however. They are also starting a five-game home-stand that begins Saturday.
