SHS tourneys to get started at two venues

Softball and golf athletes to be hosts

Sweetwater High School is hosting a three-day softball tournament starting today at the Jerry Collins Complex, plus a girls golf tournament at Sweetwater Country Club that will be held Friday and Saturday.
The SHS softball team began their tournament with morning games against Westbrook and Merkel and a game with Lamesa that starts at 2:30 p.m. The 8 a.m. game with Westbrook was a pool game.
The tournament resumes Friday as Sweetwater plays Winters at 9 a.m. and Lub-bock Estacado at 4 p.m., and concludes Saturday, when the Lady Mustangs will face Stamford at 9 a.m. and Anson at 2 p.m. at the Collins Complex. The final games start at 4:30 p.m. to-day and at 4 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
Sweetwater is off to a 2-0 start after beating Lubbock Coronado 17-3 on Tuesday in a game that was played at Coronado. The Sweetwater baseball team (0-1), meanwhile, has a tournament at Granbury starting today.
SHS coach Carola Martin said the girls golf tourna-ment, known as the Sweet-water Classic, has a 10 a.m. shotgun start both days of the event.
The tournament will have awards for the top three teams and medalists.
Sweetwater will have 13 players competing. Abilene High, Cooper, Hamlin, Jim Ned, Lamesa (two teams), Levelland, Midland Green-wood and Wylie will also have teams entered.
