ABILENE — After failing to qualify anyone a year ago, Sweetwater High School will be sending four girls and one boy to regional track competition in 2018.
The breakthrough came at the District 5/6-4A area track meet held Wednesday at Wylie High School.
Sweetwater’s Tavis Black and Bri Moriel are double qualifiers, with both making it in the girls 100-meter dash and as part of the Lady Mustangs’ 800-meter relay which also includes Angelica Beltran and Nevaeh Sarabia.
In the 100 dash, Black was second with a time of 12.53 seconds and Moriel placed third (12.94). The 800 relay was fourth with a time of 1:46.86, its best of the year.
Sweetwater’s Max Rodriguez qualified for the boys by throwing the shot 44-0 to place fourth. The Region I-4A meet is scheduled for April 27-28 at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.
