The Sweetwater High School volleyball team has been pretty good at winning on the road this season. It’s a good thing, because prior to Tuesday, the Lady Mustangs hadn’t played in their gym since their season opener on Aug. 9.
As a result the team, according to coach Liz Miller, had a small case of nerves going into its match with Lamesa and she wasn’t sure what to expect.
But the result was just fine as Sweetwater (13-11) had a straight-set victory, winning by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 at Mustang Gym to stay above .500 this season.
The Lady Mustangs were pretty much in control against Lamesa from the start, though they struggled a bit in the third game before catching fire down the stretch with an 11-4 spurt to win the match.
“I think we did all right,” Miller said. “We did some good stuff and got some blocks that we hadn’t been getting, but I think that we’ve played better. And we’re going to have to play better when we get into the district.”
Kelsi Crosson had nine kills for Sweetwater, which this Saturday will host Lubbock Cooper starting at noon as the Lady Mustangs continue their homestand before traveling to Bangs next Tuesday. Kendra Crosson had eight digs and Kelsi Crosson five, while Kendra Crosson and Kathleen Campbell had six kills and Shelby Cason five. Kinsey Browning and Suede Shirley each had two aces and Campbell had three blocks, and Alicia Finn had 13 assists.
