Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s football and volleyball ath-letes will get a jump on the 2014-15 school year Monday when they report for their first practices.
The SHS volleyball ath-letes will have roll check at 6:30 a.m. at the high school gym, according to coach Liz Miller, and practice until 11:30 a.m. Following a 90-minute lunch break, an afternoon session will be held from 1-3:45 p.m. and hitters and setters will con-tinue from 3:45-4:15 p.m. Miller said practices continue until the first scrimmages on Friday at San Angelo Central and Saturday at Lubbock Frenship. The first regular match is Monday, Aug. 11 when Sweetwater plays host to San Angelo Grape Creek.
Meanwhile, all of the SHS football athletes begin their season as well with practices starting at 7 a.m. Monday, according to coach Shane Mobley, and the fieldhouse will open at 6:15 a.m. Ath-letes must be on the field by 7 a.m. and practice until 10:45 a.m. A walk-through for JV and varsity players is from 6:30-8:30 on Monday evening. Walk-throughs for JV and varsity players also begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and Monday, Aug. 11.
Morning practices will be starting at 7 a.m. all week and beginning on Friday, players work out in pads for the first time. The first scrimmage will be Monday, Aug. 15 when Sweetwater will travel to San Angelo Lake View. The team hosts Clyde in another scrimmage Aug. 21 and will begin the regular season against Lubbock High here Friday, Aug. 29 at the 10th Sammy Baugh Classic. Mobley ex-pects between 80-95 ath-letes to report for workouts on Monday, and about one-third of them will be playing on the varsity. Sweetwater, after a 4-6 season, moves to District 2-4A, Division II this year and early predictions are for a second-place finish behind Monahans. Monahans will be one of just two schools, along with Midland Greenwood, who were also in Sweetwaterâ€™s old district. Also in the new district are Fort Stockton, Pecos and Lamesa.
This year will see plenty of traveling, with trips to Muleshoe (194 miles) and Andrews (129 miles) in non-district play in September and district road trips to Fort Stockton (211 miles), Greenwood (101 miles) and Pecos (204 miles) as well.
Next week, football athletes will have morning practices Aug. 11-14 from 7-10:45 a.m. with evening practices on Aug. 11 and 13 from 7-9:30 p.m., which the evening practices held for JV and varsity players only.
From Aug. 18-20, prac-tices begin at 4:30 p.m.
â€śMeet the Mustangsâ€ť will be Thursday, April 21 after the scrimmage with Clyde at the Bowl. Sweetwater will have team pictures Monday (JV and varsity players only) and again on Thursday.
