Over the course of Spring Break this past week, the elementary campuses of Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) received security upgrades, which will give parents and visitors a convenient way of requesting entry into the four schools.
The newly-installed security systems will now lock the front entrance doors of J.P. Cowen, Southeast, East Ridge and Sweetwater Intermediate schools. According to SISD administration, Sweetwater is the first school district within Region 14 to install a security system of this magnitude.
The new systems will allow convenient camera and intercom communication stations for parents and visitors to request entry, thus changing current visitors’ procedures.
School staff will control access to the school building from the secured side of the door, while verifying the identification of each visitor as well as the purpose of their visit. This proactive measure helps SISD ensure that student and staff safety remain a top priority of the district.
Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Terry Pittman said, “This will be a small inconvenience for accessing our schools, but one in which we feel the public will be more than happy to comply with. The added security of this entry process will allow added peace of mind to our parents and community.”Â
