A few testing results were recently received by SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District), which were announced during the May meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees. In retakes for the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) tests, there was a 92% passing rate in English/Language Art, an 81% passing rate in Math, a 96% passing rate in Social Studies and a 94% passing rate in Science.
The TAKS test was administered to juniors and seniors, while the new STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test was given to students in grades three through eight. As of Monday night's meeting, the results from the latter test had not been received.
For some of the tests, retakes will be offered as early as this summer, in which students will have to take part in student remediation during the summer. Plans are also in place this summer to have a reading academy for second graders.
Additionally, high school will offer summer school, which typically serves as a means to recover credits. However, it was noted that state legislation--House Bill 5--may be passed, which requires students to pass only five tests in order to graduate, instead of the fifteen tests currently required.
A brief enrollment report was also given, in that the district had 2,199 students as of Tuesday, May 14. While the number reflects an eleven-student decrease from last month, 90 students have been added since the first day of classes this year.
Tax collections were also reported at $7,350,046, or 96.94%, for the M&O (Maintenance and Operations), while the I&S (Interest and Sinking) stood at $875,524, or 96.98%.
Furthermore, an update on the Wallace Accelerated High School noted that 63 students from SISD attended the school this year, with eighteen of those being "completer" students. Graduation ceremonies at Wallace will be held on Thursday evening, May 30 in Colorado City.
The following night, Sweetwater ISD will hold their commencement exercises, in which board members will take part. That morning, an end-of-the-year breakfast for the district will be held.
And next month, the board will take participate in the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) in San Antonio. Following the training, they will meet for their monthly meeting on June 20, in which tentative plans are being made to recognize the baseball and softball teams on their outstanding season.
