The four Sweetwater Mid-dle School football teams came away with a split de-cision against Greenwood this past Thursday as the seventh and eighth grade Red squads won while the White teams lost.
Sweetwater travels to Big Spring this Thursday.
7th grade Red 70, Greenwood 0
Showing dominance from the start, Sweetwater Red led 24-0, 38-0 and 56-0 at the quarter breaks and ran its season record to 5-0.
A number of Sweetwater players found the end zone against Greenwood. Chris Thompson had an 80-yard punt return for his first touchdown, and later scored on a 35-yard pass interception and a 45-yard run; Kiante McCoy had a 40-yard punt return and a 15-yard fumble recovery and return for his two TDs and he also threw a 55-yard TD pass to Michael Green, who also scored on a 15-yard run; Kobe Clark scored on a 45-yard punt return; and Isak Alvarez scored on a 20-yard run.
Thompson had two PAT runs and Clark, Daniel Avi-la, Alvarez and Devin Brown one, while Andrew Melend-ez caught a PAT pass. Avila also had a two-point safety.
Also getting a takeaway was Alvarez, who recovered a fumble on a kickoff. McCoy, Green, Thompson and Melendez were the oth-er defensive standouts. Oth-er offensive standouts were Ky Hoover, Clark, Mason Maxwell, Jonathan Castillo, Taylor Turney, Trenton Hicks and Thomas Mesta.
â€śThis was another good win,â€ť said SMS coordinator Tony Cortez.
â€śEveryone contributed in one way or another. We continue to get better and improve on the little things. Each player worked hard all week during practice and it showed.
â€śWe will make some ad-justments and get ready for Big Spring,â€ť he concluded.
Greenwood 32, 7th grade White 0
Sweetwater White trailed Greenwood by only 8-0 at halftime, but didnâ€™t come out ready to play in the second half, Cortez said, though it played better overall and improved on the prior weekâ€™s performance.
John Medina, Jesus DeLeon and Alexander Kittley were defensive stan-douts for Sweetwater and Kittley, Medina and Texas Williams were offensive standouts.
8th grade Red 22, Greenwood 0
The eighth grade Red team also blanked Greenwood. All three TDs came from Jacoby Hunt, with 40- and 10-yard runs plus a score on a kickoff fumble return.
Hunter Mobley and Jor-dan McGee had PAT runs.
Other offensive standouts were Carlos Gallegos and Dylan Heiskell, while the other defensive standouts were Robert King, Mathew Figueroa, Dylan Ausborn (fumble recovery) and Tate Rainey (fumble recovery).

Greenwood 22, 8th grade White 8
Gabriel Salazar scored for Sweetwater on a 50-yard run and also added the PAT run. Salazar, Garrett Davi-son, Jacob Greenwood and Zacharie Vera were defen-sive standouts. Other offen-sive standouts were Michael Garcia and Tyler Rea.
â€śThis was a tough game,â€ť said Cortez. â€śOverall the boys did better, but just coudnâ€™t seem to get anything rolling. They played hard the entire game and will work on getting better by making the proper ad-justments.â€ť
