SMS football teams win 3-of-4 vs. Greenwood

October 22, 2013

Here are the results from Sweetwater Middle School football games last week.
7th grade White 8, Greenwood 0
The game was 0-0 until the fourth quarter, when a scoring pass from Justen Gomez to Kobe McCann and Gomez’s 2-point conversion run gave Sweetwater White the win over Greenwood.
The defensive shutout was led by McCann, Logan Wedin, Phillip Peyton, Blake Andrus, Jaden Hernandez, Tristan Trevizo, John Davis and Joshua Camacho. Other offensive standouts were Wedin, Artyss Smith, Jacob Tucker and Tyler Sutton.
“It was another great win for this group,” said SMS coordinator Tony Cortez. “This is the second straight game that this group has scored the winning touch-down with just minutes to spare. This was a total team effort with all the kids playing an important part in winning the game. The defense made some great stops keeping (Greenwood) from scoring. This gave us the opportunity late in the fourth quarter that led to the touchdown.”
7th grade Red 30, Greenwood 6
Sweetwater Red was led by Andrew Medina, who had three touchdowns in the contest — one on a punt return, plus one receiving and one rushing. The scoring catch came on a throw from Carson Brownlow, who also scored on a run in the first quarter. Providing 2-point runs were Brown-low, Medina and Alex Gal-legos.
The near-shutout victory against Greenwood was led defensively by Markus Meneses, Brownlow, Gal-legos, Mathew Hernandez, Taiden Smith, Antonio Padilla, Josiah Crain and Jeremiah Martinez. Other offensive standouts were Justin Castereno, Hernan-dez, Max Rodriguez, Rudy Sanchez, David Ehlert and Nicholas Figueroa.
The win was much needed following two straight de-feats, according to Cortez.
“The kids responded to our practices well and worked hard all week long,” he said.
“This was a good game for all the kids, because they all made adjustments from their last game and worked hard enough to win. There were many good things happening and the kids were really amped up to play. This was a great performance by the defense. We will continue to make adjustments and improve on the things we do good. We are looking forward to getting our second district win.”
8th grade Red 40, Greenwood 8
Sweetwater Red scored in all four quarters as Chris Thompson threw for five touchdowns vs. Greenwood, while the defense narrowly missed a shutout.
Kiante McCoy not only caught a scoring pass but also scored on an interception return. Kobe Clark caught two TD passes and Tristan Longoria and Andrew Melendez also had TD catches. Other offensive standouts were Jake Burton, Taylor Turney, Nicholas Gomez, Steven Limones and Jesus DeLeon.
In addition to McCoy, Thompson was a two-way standout and John Medina, Ky Hoover, Chris Jackson, Isak Alvarez and Daniel Avila were also defensive standouts.
“This group came out firing on all cylinders,” Cortez said, as he noted that the game began with Sweetwater’s special teams recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff by Green-wood. Sweetwater threw to the end zone and scored immediately after the fum-ble recovery on a throw from Thompson to Clark.
“There were many highlights on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. All the players really worked hard to continue their district winning steak dating back to last year,” Cortez said.
“We will continue to make the adjustments and work hard in practice to stay on top of our game.”
Greenwood 16, 8th grade White 0
Kurt Wetsel, J.L. Solis, Jacob Camacho, Tanner Jackson, Reggie Walker and Jacob Greenwood led Sweetwater White’s defense while the team’s offensive standouts were Alexander Kittley, Noah Martinez, David Lujan, Garret Ehlert and Rian Hill.
It a tough loss since the team allowed only a few big plays defensively, Cortez said.
Cortez said the defense played well for the most part, only giving up two touchdowns. The offense, however, could never really get anthing going though it had a few good drives.
