SMS teams top B-Spring

The Sweetwater eighth grade Red girls edged Big Spring 43-42 in two over-times, while the Sweetwater seventh grade White girls defeated Big Spring 30-8 in season-opening basketball action on Monday.
Texas Williams had 20 points and Sonora Medellin 17 for Sweetwater Red. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, while Eva Orne-las had five and Jessica Poe four. Angela Blueford scored three points and Lati Burnett, Sierra Martinez and Jaelynn Page one.
The seventh grade White girls team had a much easier time of it in its season opener with Big Spring. “It was a great team effort offensively as well as defensively,” said coach Tony Heredia.
Taylor Shamblin’s eight points paced Sweetwater. Also scoring points were Summer Turner with six, Destiny DeLaPaz and Kaci Webb with four and Mya Jackson, Annisa McCollom, Riley Dodd and Selena Hut-son with two. Results for the seventh grade Red girls and eighth grade White girls teams were unavailable at press time. All four teams host a three-day tournament starting Thursday.
