SNCHD urges parents to get children vaccinated before the first day of school

SNCHD celebrates National Immunization Awareness month with a drawing toward the chance to win a MarioKart Wii for those who recieve immunizations during August.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E.12th, will giveaway a MarioKart Wii. Everyone who receives immunizations during immunization clinics the month of August, will have their name put in the drawing to win the MarioKart Wii. The drawing will be Aug. 31.
Immunization clinic are held every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 1p.m. until 4:30 p.m.; and the second Wednesday until 6 p.m. Please bring your child’s immunization record with you. The cost is $6 per child. Medicaid and CHIPS are accepted.
School starts Aug. 22, so parents are reminded that all students entering Kindergarten are required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine, and two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine; and all students entering seventh grade are required to have one dose of Tetanus and Diphtheria toxoids and acellular Pertussis vaccine (TDAP) vaccine, one dose of meningococcal vaccine and two doses of varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian), school nurse, or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox), or of varicella immunity is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine. The health department is encouraging parents to vaccinate their children now and not to wait for the next school year to begin. If you have any question regarding these requirements or if your child needs shots, please call the health department at 235-5463.
Family Planning services are available through several funding sources. Services include pap smears, breast exams, pregnancy testing, methods of birth control, and screening and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. For an appointment call 235-2869.
