A big inning helped the Sweetwater Junior League Astros tie its District 5 final 5-5 after three innings, but Snyder’s Astros came back for an 8-6 victory to claim the championship at Sweetwater’s Sports-man’s Park in a matchup of 13-14 year-old teams.
Rocky Perez ripped a two-RBI single in Sweet-water’s five-run third and scored the tying run on Branson Guelker’s RBI groundball. The Astros’ rally started when Junior Lawhon singled, Hunter Mobley was hit by a pitch and Cory Mendez and Max Gomez walked to score Lawhon.
Perez’s hit scored both Mobley and Mendez, and Gomez scored on an error to make it 5-4. Snyder scored one in the fifth and two in the seventh, but Sweetwater nearly overcame that after pulling within 8-6 and loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
Perez walked, went to second when Joe Ruiz was safe on an error and came home on a double down the third base line by J’Corey Amos. Hardy Escobar walked, but a strikeout and groundout ended the game.
Sweetwater preceded its five-run third inning by turning a triple play in the top half of the frame. Snyder, already leading 5-0, had runners at first and second with no outs when Junior Flores hit a groundball to Gomez at shortstop. Relays to Hardy Escobar at second and Lawhon at first got the first two outs. Dylan Hargrove tried to score from third, but was tagged out at home by catcher Mendez for the third out.
