Snyder romps past Sweetwater

Sweetwater Mustang baseball, softball recap

It was simply no contest when visiting Snyder came to town Tuesday to face Sweetwater in a pair of key District 5-3A contests. The Tigers’ baseball team romped to an 11-0 win to nail down a playoff spot and damage the Mustangs’ hopes, while the Lady Tigers’ softball team rolled to a 14-1 victory to earn the No. 2 playoff seed from the district. Sweetwater, enjoying its best season in years, will still go to the playoffs as the No. 3 seed later this month after finishing 4-4 in district play, while Snyder winds up 5-3. Brownwood, with an 8-0 record, is the district champion.
The Lady Tigers had 18 hits off Sweetwater pitcher Maty Montgomery, who kept the Lady Mustangs close until a six-run Snyder outburst in the fourth in-ning. Snyder had six hits in the frame to extend its lead from 2-0 to 8-0, and was also helped by two errors.
Sweetwater avoided a shutout when Claire Wil-liams blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Kelsi Crosson and Megan Holsey collected doubles and Keyli Turner and Jackie Carey singled for Sweetwater’s only other hits in the game.
It wasn’t any better for the baseball team (2-5), which despite Tuesday’s lopsided defeat is still in contention for a playoff spot in 5-3A if the Mustangs can bounce back this Friday and defeat Big Spring in their final regular season game.
The Tigers, who are now 4-3 in district play, finished Tuesday’s game with 13 hits in just five innings before the contest was ended due to the 10-run rule. But if Sweetwater wins Friday, it will be in two- or three-way tie for third place depending on the outcome of the other game between Snyder and Brownwood (2-5). Wylie (6-1), the 5-3A champ, ended its regular season Tuesday with a 4-3 win over the Lions while Big Spring (3-4) had an open date.
Snyder used a six-run fourth inning to break open Tuesday’s game. The Tigers got four hits and took ad-vantage of two errors to increase their lead from 3-0 to 9-0. Sweetwater’s only hits were singles by Greg Aiken in the first inning, Sean Morrow in the second inning, Willie Norman in the third inning and James Clift in the fifth inning.
