BROWNWOOD — The Sweetwater volleyball team put up a fight, but lost 3-1 to Brownwood to fall to fourth place in district play Friday.
Brownwood won 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23 to improve to 3-3 while Sweetwater fell to 2-4. Sweetwater is tied for fourth with Big Spring, and it plays there on Tuesday before going to first-place Wylie (5-0) on Oct. 21 for its 5-4A finale.
“Although we didn’t come out on top in this one, the girls fought for every point,” Sweetwater coach Morgan Doyle said. “Our serving was spot on. We eliminated the errors we have been struggling with on the service line.
“We struggled a little defensively (with No. 13 for Brownwood). Some of it was to be expected but it took a little longer than I would have liked for us to adjust. At one point we were down 13-22 and Jessica Poe remained on the service line with the help of offense and defense to come back to tie it up at 22-22. I haven’t seen our girls fight that hard all year. I really wanted them to come out on top with all of the practice and preparation they ended this week,” Doyle said.
Charity Thompson paced the team with 13 kills, along with one block and one dig.
Poe had eight kills, two aces, one block and four digs; Hannah Mobley had 12 digs, one assist, two aces and five kills; and Shavie Green had eight digs, five kills and two aces. Setter Elli Lehnert led Sweetwater with 18 assists and 27 digs and had three kills and two blocks; Riley Dodd had two digs, two assists, two kills and one ace; Sonora Medellin had 11 digs; Mia Valdez had nine assists, six digs and two aces; Marisa Villanueva had six digs; and Sadie Fish had three digs for the Lady Mustangs.
