With no starters and only two lettermen â seniors Kayla Chowning and Mikki Reschman â coming back following a 24-win season, Sweetwater High Schoolâs volleyball team will enter the 2013 campaign in full rebuilding mode.
Aly Heredia, Shaneese Brown, Lena Lovelady, Zig-gy Collins, Maddie Jones, Mikealah Foust, Morgan Gomez and either Kensi Chowning or Maddie Berry are the other members of the varsity squad, which starts its season with a 6:15 p.m. match Monday at San Angelo Grape Creek before a dual match at home with Water Valley and Seminole on the following day.
âWeâre starting over,â said Liz Miller, entering her 11th year as head coach, prior to the teamâs first scrimmage last Friday.
âWeâre just going to try to get better each week and not get discouraged. Weâll just continue to work,â Miller said, adding, âI donât hear any negative talk. (The players) are talking about making the playoffs, which is a step in the right direction. Weâre going to work real hard to get one of those playoff spots.
âIâm excited, just because of how hard our players have worked (since practices began Aug. 5). The girls have encouraged me with their passion. I know itâs a small group, but everyone who is here wants to be here. You can tell by the look on their faces that they really want it. They are all competing and fighting for a spot, and thatâs cool.
âWe canât be scared; weâve got to be prepared. Iâm look-ing at (the teamâs situation) positively,â Miller said.
