Spikers start road swing after getting split in dual match
After coming away with a split in its dual match here Tuesday, the Sweetwater High School volleyball team will begin an extended stretch of time on the road today by playing a single match at Abilene Cooper — followed by a two-day tour-nament at Canyon Randall to complete the weekend.Sweetwater (2-1) dropped its opening match to Seminole on Tuesday in four games by scores of 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 20-25.The Lady Mustangs then came back to face Water Valley and lost their first game of the match, once again by a score of 25-20. But Sweetwater came back to win the next two, 25-21 and 25-10, only to see Wat-er Valley rally at the end of Game 4 and win 26-24 to force a decisive fifth game. But Sweetwater won 16-14 — overcoming a 13-10 deficit in the process — to claim the match.The sub-varsity squads also split their matches as the JV beat Water Valley but lost to Seminole, while the freshmen also lost to Seminole and a JV ‘B’ squad beat Water Valley by winning two of three games.In the varsity team’s match against Seminole, Sweetwater was paced by Kathleen Campbell and Kel-si Crosson with eight kills each while Kendra Crosson had 10 digs. Against Water Valley, Kendra Crosson had 14 kills and seven digs while Campbell delivered 10 kills and five blocks. Kelsi Crosson came up with 12 digs and seven kills. Suede Shirley had 30 assists and also came up with six kills, while Shelby Cason had five kills and two blocks.
