Sweetwater ran into a high-scoring Wylie team when the teams met in their District 5-3A base-ball opener here Tues-day, and the Mustangs were soon in a hole from which they never recovered. The Bulldogs needed just five innings to decide the issue at Newman Park as they came away with a domi-nating 16-1 win that was ended by the 10-run mercy rule. Sweetwater fell to 6-7-1 overall, while Wylie improved its season mark to 9-3.
Sweetwater was completely stymied by starting Wylie pitcher Cole Townsend, who struck out nine and allowed just one baserunner over the first three innings until he was pulled after a single by Stephen May to start the fourth.
Sweetwater’s only run scored when Greg Aiken doubled to score Marquees Jenkins, who entered as a courtesy runner following May’s single. James Clift and May singled and Shawn Campbell was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the fifth until Wylie ended the game with a double play.
May, Gabriel Medel-lin, Campbell and Clift all pitched for Sweetwater in the contest.
