RANGER — Ranger Junior College’s JV held off Sweetwater and survived a pair of home runs by Chris Thompson to win 10-6 in the opener for the Mustang baseball team on Monday.
Sweetwater led 5-4 with the help of a Thompson two-run blast in the top of the third inning, and held it until a three-run fifth put Ranger up 7-5.
Sweetwater then fell behind 10-5 after Ranger added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Thompson led off the Mustangs’ seventh with a solo homer, and a single and walk kept Sweetwater’s hopes alive. The rally ended when Ranger retired the next two hitters, however.
Sweetwater actually out-hit Ranger 10-8 in the game as Thompson, Mason Maxwell, Tony Heredia and Tyler Warner all collected two hits and Isak Alvarez and Krystian Gomez one. Warner had a two-run single in the third that scored Maxwell and Heredia to put Sweetwater ahead 5-4.
Sweetwater trailed 2-0 and 4-1 in the early going, scoring on Gomez’s RBI double in the second.
Warner started on the mound and went three innings. Heredia went 2 2/3 before Maxwell recorded the final out.
