Sweetwater Mustang basketball highlights

A near-disastrous second quarter failed to sink the Sweetwater boys basketball team here Monday, which used a big third-quarter rally to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. But the Mustangs saved the best for the very end in defeating Colorado City, 49-47, on Taylor Jones’ buzzer-beating shot at Mustang Gym.
The last of six lead chan-ges in the fourth quarter came when Jones hit the game-winner after receiving an inbounds pass from Patrick Palacios at the left wing. Jones then joined several of his teammates in celebrating as Sweetwater completed its second-half comeback after trailing 27-17 at halftime.
“We needed this,” said head coach Al Hunt, whose team is now 2-1.
“We started out the game good, but in the second quarter we were 0-for-7 (from the field).
“But we were able to get it back together in the third and fourth quarter. We kept hanging on, and hanging on, and made a couple of defensive stops.”
It was 47-47 when Col-orado City’s Benny Jones missed a free throw attempt with just 13.7 seconds left. Sweetwater rebounded and Jones — who had tied the game with a minute remaining on a steal and layup — came through again at the end.
Kaleb Hoover scored 18 points for Sweetwater and Jones 10, eight in the second half. Dylon Adames had nine, Patrick Palacios six, Gabriel Medellin four and Anthony Palacios two to complete the scoring.
Sweetwater led 14-8 after one quarter, then went cold as Colorado City used a 19-3 run for a 10-point lead at halftime. But amazingly, Sweetwater ended the third quarter back on top, 34-32, after a 17-5 run of its own. Hoover had seven of the points, and regained the lead for the Mustangs when he scored on a jump shot with 10.1 seconds left to complete the turnaround.
The JV boys (3-0) also won Monday as they defea-ted Colorado City, 35-23.
Dylan Bennett’s 14 points paced Sweetwater, which led 16-6 at halftime and 24-12 after three quarters. Also scoring were Trey Taylor with nine, Marquees Jenkins with six, Brandon Howell with four and Dean-dre Gatson with two.
