Among Stapler’s assist-ant coaches during his time at Sweetwater was current Baylor head football coach Art Briles, who was here from 1980-83.
Stapler was 225-92-8 in a 28-year coaching career that also included stops at Conroe, Andrews, Brown-wood, Carlsbad (N.M.) and Saginaw Boswell.
He was enshrined in the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 1998.
