Children's Connections Inc.

Children's Connections Inc., strengthening families parenting program, has received funding to expand their operations to Sweetwater. The program is funded by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Prevention and Early Intervention Division. Through this extra funding, they are able to serve 10 Texas counties; Fisher, Nolan, Mitchell, Coke, Tom Green, Concho, Garza, Lubbock, Terry and Midland County.
According to Brittney Thomsen, Strengthening Families family specialist, Strengthening Families: An Incredible Years Program focuses on reducing and preventing behavior problems with children, promoting social and emotional competence and increases school readiness.
Sessions are aimed at providing parents and children, with helpful information on improving family life. Sessions are provided for parents of children ages 6-12. In certain locations, children ages 6-8 years of age are able to take advantage of classes as well. The program includes weekly classes for a 10-week period or individual in-home sessions for those unable to attend group sessions.
Parents participating will receive support on how to deal with child behavior issues, learn discipline strategies, and better communication with their children. Other issues addressed will include obstacles to educational success and healthy child development.
Those attending classes can see benefits regarding decreased child problem behaviors and better maintenance of a healthy and happy family.
Sessions will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. at Building Blocks Childcare Center at 805 E. New Mexico. Children are welcome to join their parents for the classes.
