Bryon Haney of US Army Corps of Engineers demonstrates how to collect and identify macroinvertebrates in a local stream.

Recently, 122 students from Blackwell, Highland, and Roscoe visited the 69 Ranch for another day of hands-on learning with Kids On the Land volunteers. This is the third year for the program due to the generosity of the Dickson Family, Buzzi Unicem, Infigen Energy, Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation Board and Hydraulic Supply and Service Company. Others in the Maryneal community provided food and volunteers.
“The fourth and fifth grade students are learning science in the great outdoors,” said Peggy Maddox, Executive Director of Kids On the Land, Inc. The 501c3 non-profit’s program is spreading across Texas. Since its beginning in 2003, over 2,800 students have participated. The mission of the organization is – “Kids On the Land is a unique environmental program designed to teach children about the region where they live, connecting them to the land and a more sustainable future.”
A video team from the Ft. Worth office of the Army Corps of Engineers came for the event in order to video Kids On the Land in action. They see the program as an extension of their work with Texas schools in order to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Bryon Haney, geo-spatial engineer from that office has been a volunteer for the last five years.
Local volunteers included Katherine Dickson, Mandi Ligon, Jesse Monroe, Darrell Doggett, Josh Boston, Dalton and Gretchen Maddox, Susie Dent, Katy Hoskins and Celeste Hill. Others, from out of town, included Dr. Paul Martin and his wife, Betsy, Karen McGinnis, Angie Dickson, Daniel Makins and Bryon Haney.
