Sundown scored all the points it would need with touchdowns on its first two possessions Thursday, and used it as a springboard to a 28-7 win over Windthorst in the teams’ Region I-A area playoff at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl.
Maurice Sanchez, who scored Sundown’s first TD on a 51-yard run, caught a 27-yard pass from Chad Hodge in the second quar-ter to give the Roughnecks a 20-0 lead. Windthorst (6-6) scored its only touchdown on a 35-yard interception return by Dustin Schreiber to close the Roughnecks’ lead to 20-7 at halftime, but the Trojans were unable to get any closer and Drew Berry’s 8-yard run clinched the win in the fourth quar-rter. Sundown (8-4) will now face either Stamford or Panhandle in the regional semifinals next week.
Sundown rushed for 404 of its 458 yards as Sanchez and Edward Torrez each ran for over 100 yards and Berry 91. Windthorst was held to just 153 yards, with about half coming from Chandler King, who ran 14 times for 74 yards. Both teams threw three interceptions, but Sundown still had a big statistical advantage and punted just once.
Another playoff game is set tonight as unbeaten Denver City (11-0) takes on Bangs (8-3) at 7:30 p.m. in the Bowl in a Class 2A, Div-ision I area contest.
Bangs is playing here for the second straight year. The Dragons won in their last trip to Sweetwater, get-ting a 23-6 area playoff win over Idalou.
