Sweetwater went 2-0 on Monday to begin District 5 Little League all-star tour-nament play and advance to the second round.
Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds, who are hosting their tournament at the Major League field, got off to a rousing start by crushing Snyder’s all-stars 22-0. The team plays again at 6 p.m. today against Merkel, where another victory will advance Sweetwater into the tourna-ment semifinals on Friday.
All of the District 5 tournaments are double-elimination. If the 10-11-year-olds lose today, they must beat Clyde at 8 p.m. in the losers bracket on Thursday to stay alive.
The other second round game today pits Wylie vs. Abilene Southern at 8 p.m. Wylie was an easy 15-1 win-ner over Clyde in its tourn-ament opener. The local tournament runs through next Monday or Tuesday.
Sweetwater’s 13-14-year-old, or Junior League, all-stars also won on Monday. They beat Wylie, 5-2, in their game at Wylie’s field and return there to face Clyde at 7 p.m. today.
If Sweetwater wins again, it plays Snyder or Abilene North Black on Thursday. But if Sweetwater loses today, it drops to the losers bracket and plays an elimination game on Thursday.
Sweetwater has two other Little League all-star teams who begin play today. The 9-10 year-olds face Abilene Cedar Creek at 6 p.m. at Cedar Creek. A win means they play Cisco or Abilene Key City on Thursday; if they lose, they face Breckenridge on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the 11-12 year-olds will play Wylie at 6 p.m. today at Wylie. If they win, they play Abilene Southern or Cole-man on Thursday; if they lose, they play Breckenridge or Jim Ned on Wednesday.
