SW, Big Spring break tie today

There are several things Sweetwater must do today vs. Big Spring in order to realize its dream of making the playoffs and ending a long drought, says Lady Mustang coach Al Miller.“We talked about having low turnovers and managing the game like we’re supposed to. Not letting them have wide-open 3s. Taking care of the ball and giving them one shot on offense.”If Sweetwater had done a better job in just a couple of those areas the last time the teams played each other, today’s third-place district tiebreaker between two teams with 5-5 records wouldn’t be necessary. Instead, Big Spring came away with a 41-40 overtime win and both teams are tied for third place. They ended the regular season with losses; Sweetwater fell to first-place Wylie 79-34 while Big Spring was edged by No. 2 Greenwood 44-39.If Sweetwater (19-14 overall) wins today’s tiebreaker over Big Spring, it will face Fort Stockton next Tuesday in bi-district at Sonora High School at 6:30 p.m.The only suspense in the 4-3A boys race involves the battle for second place between Monahans (6-2) and Greenwood (5-3). But Sweetwater (2-6) can knock Big Spring (3-5) out of playoff contention with a win over the Steers today in their 7:30 p.m. contest that will be in Big Spring. In order to have a post-season shot, Big Spring must get wins in its last two games while Greenwood loses its last two.The Mustangs are 13-13 for the season after losing to first-place Wylie 78-39 on Tuesday while Big Spring upset Greenwood, 61-59.After playing its final road game today, Sweetwater returns home to entertain Greenwood on Tuesday in what will be its final game of the 2012-13 season.
