MONAHANS â€” Entering the fourth quarter, the Sweetwater boys basketball team appeared to be getting in position to keep its season-long winning streak alive after rallying to within six points, 42-36, of host Monahans in the teamsâ€™ District 4-3A opener.
But Monahans was having none of it. The Loboes responded with a 20-4 run from that point, defeating the Mustangs 62-40 on Fri-day as Sweetwater lost for the first time in 12 games this season.
Dylan Bennett was the only player for the Mustangs in double figures with 13 points. Bennettâ€™s 3-pointer in the final minute of the third quarter capped a 13-6 Sweetwater run that pulled the Mustangs within six points. But the Loboes were unstoppable on both ends of the floor after that as they improved to 19-3 overall. Monahans was led by Junior Moralesâ€™ 22 points, while Jacob Lair had 20 and Andres Facio 14. The Loboes also connected on nine 3-pointers to seven for the Mustangs.
Sweetwater, which never led and was tied just once, also got nine points from Michael Hunt off the bench but two of the Mustangsâ€™ most reliable scorers this season, Kaleb Hoover and Rhett Torres, managed to combine for just six points. In addition, Sweetwater got seven points from Deâ€™andre Gatson, three from J.C. Poe and two from Marquees Jenkins. The Mustangs host Snyder on Friday, which will begin a stretch of four home games out of the next five for the team. Snyder lost to Greenwood 62-45 on Fri-day while Wylie knocked off Big Spring, 55-34.
