SW boys need win vs. Chiefs to enter 4-3A play unbeaten

Only one team — San Angelo Lake View’s Chiefs — stands between the Sweetwater boys basketball team and an undefeated non-district season.
The 10-0 Mustangs’ final non-district test will come when they host Lake View at about 8 p.m. today, three days before their 4-3A ope-ner Friday at Monahans.
Sweetwater’s girls play at Midland Greenwood at 6:15 p.m. today in district action. Sweetwater and Greenwood are tied with Wylie for first place with 1-0 records.
The Roscoe and Highland girls are also 1-0 in District 13-A, Division II, while the Roscoe and Highland boys start district Friday. One team is 3-0 in district — Blackwell’s boys in 14-A, Div. II. They host Bronte at about 7:30 p.m. today.
A stunning 44-40 district opening win over Big Spring got Sweetwater’s girls off to a great start, as Big Spring was ranked 16th in Class 3A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. The Lady Steers were ranked No. 20 in Monday’s poll.
Highland (15-2), which will travel to Ira today, fell to No. 2 in the girls Class 1A, D-II rankings after holding the No. 1 spot all season.
But after dropping two of four games in late Decem-ber, the Lady Hornets have beaten Ira and Westbrook by an average of 35 points. Highland beat Westbrook 79-34 Friday in its District 13-A, Division II opener after knocking off Ira, 52-27, on Dec. 28 to capture third place at Grady’s two-day holiday tournament.
Roscoe’s girls are at West-brook today as they try for a 2-0 district start.
Highland and Roscoe, who finished 1-2 in district a year ago, have their first of two meetings Jan. 14.
The Blackwell boys defea-ted Robert Lee on Friday, 48-24, to stay atop 14-A, Division II.
The Blackwell girls (1-4) were not as fortunate, los-ing to Robert Lee 48-22.
