SW boys to start district at Monahans
Coach Al Hunt and his players may not like to talk about it, but the Sweetwater boys basketball team is off to one of the best starts in school history.Although the calendar is already 10 days into the new year and the district season begins tonight, the Mustangs (11-0) have yet to lose. But Sweetwater will have its hands full when it travels to Monahans for its District 4-3A opener that tips off at 7:30 p.m.The Loboes are almost as hot as Sweetwater, as they boast an 18-3 record. In addition, Monahans returns three starters from last year’s team that recorded over 20 wins and made the playoffs.Sweetwater survived one of its toughest challenges to date Tuesday by edging San Angelo Lake View, 47-44, at Mustang Gym in its final non-district game. Rhett Torres had 17 points, Kaleb Hoover 12 and De’andre Gatson 10 for the Mustangs, who used an 8-2 game-ending run to over-come a three-point deficit.Today will mark the first of several boys-girls doubleheaders for Sweetwater in District 4-3A play over the next few weeks. Coach Al Miller’s Lady Mustangs (1-1), coming off a loss to Greenwood, face Monahans (0-2) at 6:15. Sweetwater defeated Big Spring in its district opener before suf-fering a lopsided defeat to Greenwood on Tuesday.In District 14-A, Division II, Blackwell and Water Val-ley — both 4-0 — will meet today at Water Valley in a first-place boys showdown. Blackwell defeated Bronte, 54-40, in its most recent game on Tuesday. Also, the Blackwell girls (1-5) will be taking on Water Valley, which is 2-4 in district.Blackwell lost to Bronte, 48-33, on Tuesday. Steph-anie Metcalf had 10 points and Halee Sanderson nine to pace the Lady Hornets.
