COLLEGE STATION — The regular season is still several weeks away. However, this past week proved Sweetwater could hold its own with the big boys in 7-on-7 football action at the highest level.
Sweetwater finished with a 2-2 record after losing, 39-33, to Tyler Chapel Hill in double overtime in a first round championship bracket game at the Texas 7-on-7 Championships that was played Friday morning.
The elimination came a day after Sweetwater — which was making its first state 7-on-7 tournament appearance in school history — finished second in its four-team pool Thursday that also included Gilmer, Cuero and Boerne. Sweet-water got to the champion-ship bracket with a 35-33 win over Boerne in its final pool game Thursday. The team lost to Gilmer, 36-20, to start pool play, but then bounced back to beat Cuero 27-20 and edge Boerne.
Sweetwater reached the state level with a top-two finish this past month at a state qualifying tournament in Stephenville, where it was declared the champion after winning a coin flip with Gatesville.
This year’s team included Michael Lawrence, Deshaun Williams, Colby Greenwood, Kaegan Jeffrey, Isaiah McGee, Kiante McCoy, Denzell Moore, Lowell Williams, Hunter Mobley, Max Gomez, Jacoby Hunt, Bray Amos and Michael Green, with Josh Gilbert serving as the team’s coach.
