After a district-opening win over Snyder four days earlier, the Sweetwater softball team had another chance to make a big statement in the early 4-3A race when it hosted Midland Greenwood on Tuesday.
And the Lady Mustangs looked ready to do that over the first five innings as senior pitcher Maty Montgomery pitched a shutout while Sweetwater opened a 2-0 lead at the Jerry Collins Complex.
But Sweetwater — the benefactor of a 10-run second inning in its 11-8 win over Snyder — found itself on the other end of the spectrum as Greenwood came up with five runs in the top of the sixth inning, and held on for a 5-2 victory.
As a result, the Ranger-ettes (2-0) — not Sweetwater — are all alone at the top of the district standings.
Sweetwater (15-10 over-all, 1-1 district) fell into a four-way tie for second place, joining Snyder, Big Spring and Monahans, with Wylie last at 0-2.
Sweetwater will go to Big Spring on Friday.
Greenwood had only four hits off Montgomery until the sixth, when it sent 10 batters to the plate and had five hits, all singles, while also taking advantage of a fielding error and a walk.
Sweetwater scored single runs in the third and fifth innings against Greenwood pitcher Kassie Maddox in jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Megan Hol-sey and Morgan Gomez hit two-out singles and Holsey scored when Kelsi Crosson was safe on an error. Holsey scored again in the fifth inning, when she reached on a one-out infield single and came around when Crosson doubled.
Montgomery allowed nine hits by Greenwood, which is now 12-10 overall. She finished with five strikeouts in pitching her second straight complete game.

Sweetwater lost to Sny-der, 8-5, in Friday’s district opener.
