SW girls fall at Abernathy, 66-51

Sweetwater fell behind 22-10 at Abernathy in the teams’ non-district girls basketball game Tuesday in part because of difficulties handling the press.Though the Lady Mus-tangs were able to close the gap to six points in the sec-ond period, they never com-pletely recovered and lost the game, 66-51.“We had 24 turnovers,” said Sweetwater coach Al Miller, whose team’s record dropped to 2-3. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot and we got outhustled a bit. They were a little quicker than we were.”Abernathy (5-1) still led by 12 points, 36-24, at half-time and was up 55-35 after three periods. Shaneese Brown (14 points) was the only Sweetwater player to score in double figures.Abby McPherson, Hay-ley Brownlow and Kayla Chowning each finished the game with seven points, while Bianca Castillo and Taylor McPherson had six points and Nisha Williams and Maddie Jones two.“It was little things that got us,” Miller said. “Just basic basketball. We’d turn it over a couple of times, then break (the press) three or four times in a row, then turn it over twice. We were never consistent.”Despite 17 points from Kensi Chowning and 10 by Abby Garcia, Sweetwater’s JV girls (2-3) also came up short in their game Tues-day, losing to Abernathy’s JV girls 46-38. Marissa Sanchez had four points, Jasmine Reddic three and Gabby Fuentes and Payton Moore two apiece. Both Sweetwater teams will entertain Merkel next Tuesday, along with Sweet-water’s freshman girls.
