A bad start was too much for the Sweetwater girls basketball team to overcome here Friday as they lost to Class 5A Abilene High, 55-36, at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater fell behind 18-4 after the opening quar-ter before tightening up on defense in the second period, when they held Abilene to just six points. But the Lady Mustangs still trailed 24-14 at halftime, and were unable to get any closer over the final two quarters.
Taylor McKoy scored 18 points for Sweetwater, but she was the only Lady Mustang to reach double figures in the contest as the team fell to 1-3.
Abilene (2-2) was ahead by 15, 38-23, at the end of three quarters. Sweetwater must now go on the road to face San Angelo Central on Monday and Abilene Cooper on Tuesday. Kinsey Browning and Kendra Crosson had five points, Alicia Finn four, Candice Hernandez three and Suede Shirley one against Abilene.
Sweetwaterâ€™s JV girls did much better in their game Friday as they used a 17-5 second quarter run to beat Abilene Highâ€™s JV, 34-24, for their fourth straight win this season without a loss.
The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter, but Sweetwater led Abilene 19-7 at halftime after putting together its decisive second-period run. The Lady Mustangs were ahead 26-15 after three quarters.
Shelby Cason (11) and Janell Walker (10) were the leading scorers for Sweet-water. The Lady Mustangs also got seven points from Kathleen Campbell, four points from Kelsi Crosson and two points from Destiny Osteen.
After ending their brutal stretch of three straight games against Class 5A schools on Tuesday, Sweet-water is idle for the rest of the week to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to play Nov. 30.
