ABILENE — Going into Tuesday’s game at Wylie, the Sweetwater girls basket-ball team knew it might be playing not only for the final time against Wylie as a district opponent, but for the final time this season.
But after losing 61-28 to the No. 4 Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Mustangs got good news. Big Spring also lost to Midland Greenwood, 47-36, forcing a District 4-3A tie-breaker to decide the No. 4 playoff spot later this week.
If this sounds familiar, it should. In 2013, Sweetwa-ter and Big Spring also had to play a District 4-3A tie-breaker, this time to decide the No. 3 playoff berth, with Sweetwater winning 44-43. Just three teams qualified for the playoffs in 4-3A a year ago, but now four will get to go. Details of the tie-breaker were not available at press time today.
This year, the No. 3 spot went to Snyder (5-5), which claimed it on Tuesday with a regular-season-ending win over last-place Monahans.
Though Sweetwater kept it close in the early going of Tuesday’s game, it was over once Wylie — which finished with a perfect 10-0 district record — began to heat up from 3-point range as the lead ballooned from 4-2 midway through the first quarter to 18-3 by the conclusion of the period.
Wylie led by 27, 37-10, at halftime and was up 32 points (51-19) by the start of the fourth quarter. No one for Sweetwater hit double figures on Tuesday: Kayla Chowning had eight points to lead the Lady Mustangs.
Also scoring were Shan-eese Brown with six, Taylor McPherson with four, Lexi Castillo with three, Abby McPherson with two and Hayley Brownlow with one. Castillo, Chowning and Brown hit three-pointers for Sweetwater (4-6 in dis-trict, 9-14 overall).
