SW has final home DH

January 28, 2014

After failing to sweep a basketball doubleheader here in its three previous opportunities, Sweetwater will get a final chance today when it hosts Monahans.
It’s also a chance for both the Mustang boys (1-4 in District 4-3A) and the Lady Mustang girls (3-4) to im-prove their playoff chances with a pair of victories.
Despite having five games still to play in their season, the boys have more urgen-cy after losing three straight to fall into fifth place.
Meanwhile, the Sweetwa-ter girls are riding high after Friday’s 53-47 win over second-place Greenwood that moved them into a third-place tie with Snyder and Big Spring. Today’s game at 6:15 p.m. gives them a good chance to build on that as they are facing a Monahans team that is 0-7 in district and in last place. Friday’s win was paced by Shaneese Brown’s 12 points, nine in the fourth quarter. Kayla Chowning had 11 points, while Hayley Brownlow had nine, Taylor McPherson and Maddie Jones seven, Cierra Knox five and Nisha Williams two. Sweetwater hit eight 3-pointers.
In District 14-A, Black-well’s boys (6-3) are coming off a 65-52 victory over last-place Sterling City that put them back into a tie for third place with Bronte. The Hornets host Robert Lee (5-4) today and go to Bronte on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Blackwell girls (2-9) will be in a spoiler role when they host Robert Lee (6-5). The Lady Hornets lost to Sterling City 47-18 Friday. Brooklyn Harris led the team with eight points while Shianne Solis scored five points, Crystal Chavez four and Halee Sanderson one. No individual informa-tion from the Blackwell boys game was reported.
